FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THANK YOU for your prayers and contributions on behalf of the Passionist Overseas Missions and Deacon Mike Edwards.  May God bless you!

Here is a report of the recent Finance Council meeting. A review of the fiscal year showed that our parish closed with a surplus of $1,000 and its account ended with a balance of $4,593.  The school closed with a surplus of $800 and its account ended with a balance of $2,516.  We made it!  Thanks be to God!!

Council members discussed beginning a new “Building Fund.”  This proposal includes a new monthly envelope in our 2011 offertory envelope box.  Donations to this Fund will begin to build a reserve so that when the time is needed we will have funds available to begin updating our buildings. Council members are requesting permission for this Fund from Bishop Foys so that these donations are non-assessable.  More information will be available at a later date.

As you know our school building is almost 50 years old and almost everything is original.  Many functions such as hvac, restrooms, kitchen, lighting, flooring, doors and windows need to be replaced.  Our church building is 40+ years old and is in need of a new hvac system, exterior doors and handicapped restrooms.

We believe the financial resources needed to prepare for these updates must begin sooner than later.  To that end we hope to initiate a new “Building Fund” in 2011.  Donations to this fund will be placed in a new account.

It was also resolved that if our offertory budget deficit year to date reaches $5,000, we will take a second collection to reduce the budget deficit.  It is hoped that this procedure will keep us from getting too far behind in our offertory collections (which is our primary source of revenue.)

We continue to need $5,200 each Sunday to maintain a balanced budget.  Thanks for providing your Sunday offering each and every week of the year, especially if you are away on vacation or other travel.

We will conduct our Parish Offertory Commitment in early November.  More information to follow.

CCD registration  if you have not registered your children for CCD or paid your registration fee please do so today.  Forms are available in the N. Walnut Street vestibule.  We have 19 children registered in our CCD Program.  Classes begin on Wednesday, Sept. 8  from 7 – 8 pm.   Enclosed you will find our Sacramental Preparation Policy.  If you have any questions please contact Fr. Doug.

To help understand the New Revised Roman Missal and so that we will be able to participate at Mass when the new translation is ready for use, we will sponsor an education series.  Each of the following topics will be presented after Mass.  Each of the sessions will include a ten to fifteen minutes oral presentation and time for Questions and Answers.

new altar server training:  it is the custom of St. Edward to begin altar serving in the third grade.  To prepare for this service you will be required to attend one of two trainings (each has three classes).

You can attend on Saturday from 10:30 to noon on August 14, 21, 28 or on Sunday, September 5, 12, 19 after Mass for 1.5 hours.   If you are unable to attend one of these training sessions there will be another opportunity to be trained in the Spring, 2011.

There are four responsibilities of an altar server:
1)  arrive 15 minutes early when you are scheduled;
2)  follow directions;
3)  pray at Mass;
4)  be reverent during Mass.

If you are interested in becoming an altar server please let Fr. Doug know asap.  He will give you a paper to fill out with your parent and bring it with you to your first training session.   If you have any questions call the pastor at 234.5444.

The new school year is just around the corner.  Our Open House will be held on Wednesday, August 4 from 1 to 6 pm.  The first day of school is Friday, August 6 (private transportation).  The cafeteria doors open at 7:30 am.  School begins at 8 am.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Today we welcome Deacon Mike Edwards, a representative of Passionist Overseas Missions.  His visit to our parish is in conjunction with our participation in the Annual Mission Cooperative Program for the Diocese of Covington.

Passionist Missionaries have served in mission territories throughout the world for many years.  Today Passionist priests and brothers are ministering to people in Haiti, the Caribbean, Africa, Jamaica, West Indies, Honduras and the Philippines.

Most Missions offer a four-fold program of education, health, economic development and communication organization to the people they serve.  They work to break the cycle of poverty, illness and educational deprivation and substitute a willingness to learn and progress.  You can assist them in the endeavors.

Kindly give your attention to Deacon Edwards’ important appeal and please be generous as your circumstances allow when the second collection is take at Mass today.

To help understand the New Revised Roman Missal and so that we will be able to participate at Mass when the new translation is ready for use, we will sponsor an education series.  Each of the following topics will be presented after Mass.  Each of the eight sessions will include a ten to fifteen minutes oral presentation and time for Questions and Answers.

The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops has designated July 25 - 31, 2010 as National Natural Family Planning Awareness Week.

NFP Awareness Week is an annual national educational campaign that focuses attention on NFP methods and Church teachings which support their use in marriage.

The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. This year's theme is "TRUST - God has a Plan for Your Marriage

Since 2009 our diocese has required engaged couples to participate in NFP training as part of their marriage preparation. These couples, whether they realize it or not, are blessed to have been given the opportunity to learn this method of following God's plan for life and love in marriage.

However, the beauty and wisdom of Catholic teaching in this area still needs to be shared with the wider Catholic community!  Help spread the good news about God's plan for marriage and family life!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

We welcome Allan Frederick to our parish.  He arrived last Tuesday and will be spending some of the summer with us.  Allan is discerning a call to priesthood for the Diocese of Covington.  We wish him well and pray that God will provide guidance during his discernment.

What if God does care about what I wear to church? If the answer to the question is “Yes” it is important that for us to ask:  Have we become too casual about our attire and attendance at Mass?  Perhaps we think “it doesn’t matter.”  The truth is that it does matter!  “Sunday best” seems to have lost its meaning.  Perhaps if we saw our attire and attendance at Mass as giving back to God, we might see that “dressing up” is the least we can do for God.  Dressing up is also a nonverbal way of showing our children that our church is an important place.  The church is God’s house.   And Mass is an important event for we do this in memory of Jesus who died for me.

To help understand the New Revised Roman Missal and so that we will be able to participate at Mass when the new translation is ready for use, we will sponsor an education series.

Each of the following topics will be presented after Mass.  Each of the eight sessions will include a ten to fifteen minutes oral presentation and time for Questions and Answers.

next weekend  Hunger Hurts, Give Generously
after Mass Roman Missal III

Forming Good Stewards:  The seventy two disciples, that Jesus sent in thirty six directions were amazed at their success.  Did they really have faith in Jesus as they left on their mission?  We can almost hear them grumbling, “He is sending us like lambs among wolves with no money, no provisions, no sandals, and we cannot even greet people on the way.  Does he expect us to work miracles?”

But off they went.  And they performed miracles.  Despite their doubts, they had faith in Jesus and they were able to do great things because of their faith.  When we feel called to step out in faith to imitate Jesus in our world, do we have doubts?  Do we fail to act because of our doubts?  Or do we act, despite our doubts, amazed at what we can accomplish when we have faith in Jesus?  As a result of our Baptism it is our responsibility to nurture our faith in Jesus so we can constantly be amazed at what we can accomplish in His name.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

We welcome Allan Frederick to our parish.  He arrived last Tuesday and will be spending some of the summer with us.  Allan is discerning a call to diocesan priesthood.  We wish him well and pray that God will provide guidance during his discernment.

July 1 began our new fiscal year.  In order for us to keep up with our budget for 2010-2011 we will need $5,200 each Sunday.  We offer a special THANKS to those who continue to provide their regular weekly Sunday offering!  An end of the year report will be available during September, our Stewardship Renewal Month.  Again, we thank those who shared their time, talent and treasure with our parish this past fiscal year.  May God reward you for your generosity!

Dressing up is also a nonverbal way of showing our children that our church is an important place; it is God’s house.   And Mass is an important event;  for we do this in memory of Jesus who died for me.
