Programs to Prepare Children to Receive the Sacraments of Initiation

In preparing children for the sacraments parents have the responsibility to make sure their children are well prepared to receive them. St Edward Church assists parents in this important duty. It too takes seriously this responsibility and has implemented programs to prepare these young parishioners for the sacraments.

There is much formation and preparation that needs to occur before a child is ready to celebrate the sacraments of initiation. The following policy will guide our parish’s efforts in this regard. It will help parents know what is expected in order for their children to receive the sacraments.

A two year program is necessary for a child to be prepared to receive the Sacraments of First Penance and First Communion. Religious formation and training begins in the first grade. Each child planning to receive these sacraments must receive religious instruction in CCD, St. Edward School or be home schooled.

Since it is a two year program, children in the second grade who did not receive instruction in the first grade would receive these sacraments in the third grade. First Penance is often celebrated in January. First Communion is celebrated on the First Sunday of May.

A three year program is necessary for a child to be prepared to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Religious formation and training begins in the sixth grade. Near the end of the seventh grade, a Parent/Student Confirmation Orientation Meeting is conducted whereby the Confirmation Program is presented. The student may enroll in the Confirmation Program. If s/he is not ready to make this commitment s/he is encourage to continue his/her religious education by attending the CCD class.

This sacrament is celebrated by the Bishop of Covington, or his designee, each Spring.

These programs are the ordinary way to receive the sacraments at St. Edward’s. Should a student transfer from another parish, the necessary adjustments to the program will need some attention by the parents.
