Lenten commentary: As the Catechism of the Catholic Church observes, “The interior penance of the Christian can be expressed in many and various ways. Scripture and the Fathers insist above all on three forms, fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.” (CCC#1434)
“The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church’s penitential practice. These times are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and missionary works).” (CCC#1438)
As a reminder, the rules of fasting and abstinence are as follows:
- Catholics aged 18 to their 59th birthday are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The Church defines this as one meal a day and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity.
- Catholics from the age of 14 are obliged to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
Illness or other circumstances might make it necessary for an individual to practice ways of doing penance other than fasting and abstinence.
