Good Day All:

We've been extremely busy for the past couple of weeks.  The future looks busy too!

2nd and 3rd Reading:  The students are beginning to settle in and are working hard. We are still completing most reading workbook pages together in class.   AR points look great! Please keep encouraging your child to read!

5th Reading:  We have begun a new novel, Shades of Gray.  The boys seemed to enjoy Sign of the Beaver and they did well on the activities.  The new book is set right after the Civil War.  The Hero,  or main character, Matt has lost his entire family to the Yankees or as a direct result of the War and has to move in with an aunt and uncle.  As a Confederate Matt believes his Uncle is a coward because he refused to fight on either side.  Matt has to do some soul searching, learning and definitely grows up, not only physically, but mentally.  I hope the students will like this interesting book!

We will continue working on the basil reading series during class time.

Science and Social Studies:

K-1st:  We are learning about wants vs needs, and creating weather charts.

2nd, 3rd:, 4th and 5th:   We will finish with weather this week.  the students will create charts and graphs showing the data we've collected over the past two weeks.

All Classes: We will begin making Mardi gras masks next week.  Please send in (scraps, please don't go and buy any shiny material, matallic trims, lepard prints, or fuzzy material for the children to use on their masks.  The students have been designing the masks and we'll begin construction next week.

As always, have a blessed day!

Good Day!

Wow! What a great time we are having this year. The students are truly on their best behavior. Please let them know how much we teachers appreciate their efforts. Our class has earned a sno-cone Tuesday, because of their STAR behavior!

The 2nd graders are still adjusting to switching classrooms. Organization is going to be their greatest hurdle.

Remember you can access the Library on line to check on the books your student is reading or checking out for at-home reading. The address is:

http://webopac.infovisionsoftware.com/stedward/

Mrs. Westhoff, Mrs. Stoss and an army of others have worked hard this summer to get the Library on-line. We are grateful for their dedication!

Reading and Spelling info: Some of the students are struggling with the new concepts and content in reading class. The workbook pages are stumping them! We will work slowly for the first semester. Most Reading workbook pages will be completed in class. Spelling pages will be sent home as homework. I’m not moving to a new story until we’ve covered each new concept together. This means it may take us longer than a week to cover each story. The spelling word schedule follows the reading stories, so it may be 6 or 7 school days between lists. You will have to check the agenda for spelling test days. It won’t always be Thursday as first scheduled.

Many students will have sight word cards to review nightly. It is super important to their reading success and comprehension that they recognize these words immediately. The students will have the cards in a baggie along with a note from me. They should also have the task listed in their agenda.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Have a great day!

Aug. 12 Update

Friday, Aug 12:    What a terrific week we've had!  I'm so proud of the way the older students have taken care of the younger ones.  There have been acts of kindness and STAR behaviors all over our school!

SCIENCE:

Definitions--4/5th graders should have all definitions written and should be studying them nightly.  We will not be testing on them until Monday, the 22nd.   2/3 graders are still creating their study cards in class.  We will not be testing on them until Friday, the 26th.  The word list is on Spelling City so the students can study and play games with their vocabulary words.

www.spellingcity.com     when you get to the site click on "find a list."    Then under Advanced Search type in my name: Debbie McKinley. This should take you to the screen where you can select a list--just click on either spelling lists or vocabulary lists.  The students may choose any of the "free" activities as I'm not a paying member of Spelling City.

READING:

We have been doing most of the workbook pages in class.  I wanted the students to understand how to do them before I sent them home.  But they're coming. . . next week.  The students will receive a packet of work book pages on Mondays (Tuesday next week).  They should work on them a couple each night and return them Friday morning completely finished.  If there is a problem, or they don't understand something all they have to do is ASK, I'll be glad to help or clarify.

SPELLING:

We will take a test in 2/3 and 5th today (Friday), and then do retakes if needed on Tuesday.  The spelling lists are below (click "READ MORE").

Have a great week!
